In today’s quick 2-minute read, we delve into the art of cold calling, a crucial skill for anyone in sales.

Many of the reps, founders and consultants I coach tend to shy away from cold calling.

However, the real objective should be to initiate a meaningful dialogue and identify a pressing problem that your prospect is facing.

No point booking a meeting if the prospect does not have a genuine problem to solve.

So, how can you effectively use cold calling to achieve this? Let’s explore my 5 X C Method below:

  1. Consent: Start with a permission based opener. “I know you are not expecting my call, mind if I take a moment to share why am calling.”

  2. Challenge: Identify their pain points. “I’ve been talking to several leaders who are struggling with [specific challenge]. Does this resonate with your current situation?”

  3. Convey: Offer your value prop and a customer story. “Given your situation, I’d like to share a strategy that helped a similar company overcome this challenge, resulting in [specific benefit].”

  4. Counter: Address objections proactively. Look for them before the prospect mentions them. “We already have a solution in place”….”Most do when I call like this, mind sharing what you like about it?” (No one expects a seller to ask this kind of question, you can then move on to..”Seems like you’re happy with it, may I ask, what would get you to change?” Or alert the prospect to your biggest differentiator…

  5. Close for the Meeting: Seal the deal. “Would you be open to a brief meeting to take a peak at this when am not cold calling you out of the blue?”

Remember, the key here is to engage in a conversation, not just push for a meeting.
